This year’s Leica Oskar Barnack Award had a record number of entries: around 2,800 entries from 101 different countries (last year’s competition total was 2,000 entries). Needless to say, jury members had many photographs to debate over, and debate they did.
The jury members included: Bruce Gilden, Magnum photographer, Stephan Erfurt, Director of the C/O Berlin, Valérie Fougeirol, Creative Director of the Magnum Gallery in Paris, Karin Rehn-Kaufmann, Artistic Director of the Leica Galerie in Salzburg and Brigitte Schaller, Art Director of Leica Fotografie International magazine.
The winners of the two awards, the Leica Oskar Barnack Award and the Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award 2012, will be announced on 20 June 2012. Watch this video to get an insider glimpse of the 2012 Oskar Barnack jury deciding who the winners will be and to see who steels the show!

so the winners had already been called up…… right????? we r just waiting for the complete list of finalist….with this it is safe to conclude that the other participants dat didnt received any call from leica, only hope is to be part of the 10 finalist coz the 2 winners already recieved a call / confirmation as the end of the video shows???? pls correct me if im wrong…..thx

My thoughts were the same as Anthony. It’s such an intimate, beautifully shot video that gives a lot of insight into the process but the last second would deflate anyone who entered knowing they did not receive a phone call by now. Obviously everyone knows the odds of winning are uphill but I think its the suddenness of the phone call takes one off guard. Still a great video though, I’m glad I watched it.

the announcement was very misleading… from the last part of the video, one of the jury gave a call to the winner. so how come from your press release, the announcement will be on 20th of June?
once and for all, may we know what is the meaning of that call? was that a confirmation call for the 2 winners? please clarify for the sake of the those who joined the contest.

Only two winners were called and the full finalists list will be available on June 20th. Those who did not get any phone calls could still possibly be among the 10 finalists. Hope this answers your question!

Let me tell you that this is the most unprofessional way of announcing to people that they have not been chosen to win the Oskar Barnack prize. The Leica prestige is a thing of the past. Both in the camera making department and the way you communicate with real photographers, you no longer have respect for both their work and struggle.

Chill out. I entered the contest the year before last and understand the work, etc. that goes into making a submission and I hope to renter the contest next year (its supposed to be fun). But please realise that the world is imperfect, that these judges had wildly different perspectives on what types of pictures should be make the various successive cuts and that they exhibited very normal group dynamics in the process of finally selecting the winner–which the video encourages us to believe was a very popular consensus (I have no doubt it was). The winner was a “newcomer” (thats exciting and hats off to them) and while the one mobile phone call to the winner was perhaps a little “impromptu” (did I wake you?), it did provide a nice and exciting end to the video. It doesn’t change the fact on who the winner is and it certainly does not speak in a derogatory way about Leica and its products. In fact, the almost “gritty” nature of the video helps belie the common refrain that Leica is just for very wealthy “armchair” photographers. Give the “red dot” a break. Cheers.
